Sapling~ english elm?

For the past few years there has been an english elm sapling growing in my bushes. Today i finally decided to uproot it. I put the sapling into a regular plastic bucket with water and some plant food. I plan to change the water every day for about 6 days(so that there is no bugs laying their eggs in the standing water) to see if it will survive. I googled english elm for information, but nothing could help me. I would like to know, how to take care of an english elm sapling. I have a book of trees, but it just gives me basic info.
